On July 18th, 2017 Sterling Heights FD battled the largest fire they have ever battled in the past. The fire at Buff Whelan Chevrolet Dealership turned into a fourth alarm and included 12 different agencies working to extinguish the fire. Without boring you all with the details, alarms are simply lists of fire departments to be dispatched to the incident. My partners did an absolutely AMAZING job keeping a great line of communication between dispatch and the responders on scene.
It is not very often you hear praise on this side of the radio or even think of dispatch when things like this happen. However, Sterling Heights Fire Department went out of their way to invite us to their award ceremony at their open house October 8th. Not only did they recognize the stupendous work of my partner who handled their radio traffic but his backup who assisted the entire time, those of us who helped when we could, and others who took over the other tasks in the room while we were busy handling the large structure fire. We were taking in calls all the way in Lenox Twp (17 miles away!) for the fire even hours after the initial 911. So you can imagine the amount of incoming calls we were yielding from closer areas.
Anyways, on the day of the open house, Adam, Myles and I arrived at the fire station and met with my coworkers. We were one of the first to be called to the stage to be acknowledged.
The Lieutenant spoke of how the day went and what we did to make it run as smooth as possible for them. It was extremely uplifting to be a part of.
Afterwards, we were able to eat donuts and cider, check out all the fire trucks and equipment, and spray the fire hose! We waited in line to spray the hose, but once it was our turn, Myles wanted nothing to do with it.
Overall, it was a stupendous day!!
